Wakefield Trinity and England wing Tom Johnstone is set to miss the rest of the 2019 season after suffering a serious knee injury in Friday's victory over Hull FC, the Super League club have confirmed.

Johnstone ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, having sustained a similar injury to his right leg in 2017.

The 23-year-old, who has scored six tries this season, will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the campaign, dashing his hopes of being involved in Great Britain's tour to the Southern Hemisphere.

Wakefield chairman Michael Carter said: "I am devastated for Tom, who has started the season so strongly.

"I know he had his sights set on a fantastic season and a Great Britain tour at the end of it, and to be cruelly struck down for the second time in two years is incredible bad luck."
