Hull Kingston Rovers had two reasons to celebrate on Saturday, recording a crucial Super League win over Catalans Dragons just hours after it was announced Tony Smith had signed a long-term deal to remain with the club.

Rovers boosted their hopes of maintaining their top-flight status with a 24-6 triumph in Perpignan that owed much to the performance of Ryan Shaw.

As well as kicking six goals, Shaw crossed for two of his side's three tries. Danny McGuire scored the other, with the only response from the Dragons a David Mead try that was converted by Tony Gigot.

The result lifts Rovers two points clear of London Broncos at the foot of the table, though the capital club have a game in hand - at home to fellow strugglers Leeds Rhinos on Sunday - in their favour.

Rovers have fixtures against the Broncos and third-placed Salford Red Devils to come in the final two rounds of the regular season, though Smith will now be staying on as head coach beyond September.

The Australian initially joined on an interim basis but has agreed to a three-year contract that will run until the end of the 2022 campaign.

"There's great potential here and I'm committed to the vision of building something," Smith - who was previously in charge of Leeds and Warrington Wolves in Super League - said in a statement.
