Amanaki Mafi has been released on bail after appearing in court following his arrest for allegedly assaulting Rebels team-mate Lopeti Timani.

Rugby Australia and the Rebels confirmed that Mafi was in police custody following an incident in Dunedin after a 43-37 defeat to the Highlanders on Saturday.

A New Zealand Police spokesperson later confirmed to Omnisport that a 28-year-old man was charged with "injuring with intent to injure".

Mafi was due in court on Monday and Rugby Australia announced that the Japan international was released on bail on the condition he does not associate with Timani.

The case was adjourned until August 3.

Mafi, the 2017 Australian Super Rugby player of the year, is out of contract with the Rebels at the end of this season.
