Leeds Rhinos were only able to end their run of eight straight Super League defeats with a potentially costly 20-20 draw at home to Wakefield Trinity on Friday.

The Rhinos came into the crucial clash in ninth, a place and three points behind Wakefield, knowing another loss would all but end their Super 8s hopes.

But Leeds, although still alive with a draw, missed a huge opportunity to close the gap after conceding eight points in the final 10 minutes to let Wakefield off the hook.

Kevin Sinfield's men led early through Ryan Hall and scored twice more, with Richie Myler and Ash Handley, after Bill Tupou's sensational individual effort had drawn Trinity level.

Kyle Wood responded before the break, but the Rhinos still looked to have done enough to secure victory until the same man scored again in the 71st minute.

Ryan Hampshire converted and another kick then stole a point for the visitors to ensure they remain well placed in the top eight.

Elsewhere, St Helens pulled further clear at the top of the table with an entertaining 34-18 win over Hull FC.

Wigan Warriors' defeat on Thursday presented the league leaders with the opportunity to boost their advantage to eight points and they did exactly that as Ben Barba and Jonny Lomax each scored twice in a seven-try triumph.

Salford Red Devils' miserable recent form continued in a 24-6 defeat to Castleford Tigers.

Jake Webster scored in either half as the Tigers eased to victory after the interval.
