Joel Tomkins went to hospital with a head injury as Hull KR were beaten by Warrington Wolves in Super League on Saturday.

Rovers had won late against city rivals Hull FC in their season opener last time out, but their second match was an altogether more miserable affair, with Wire running out 28-14 winners.

Tomkins was caught high by Blake Austin inside the opening half-hour, with the Warrington man sent to the sin bin as his opponent was assessed.

Rovers had started brightly with Ben Crooks and Craig Hall scoring either side of a try from Harvey Livett.

Tom Lineham's converted try put Warrington in front at the break, though, and Livett scored a second while Josh Charnley and Mike Cooper all also crossed.

Reflecting on the game's key incident, Rovers coach Tim Sheens said: "[Tomkins] is a sick boy and in a bad way. We are concerned for him.

"I think the player concerned may have a little worry this week, but it doesn't help us for the fact in the 10 minutes he was off we scored a try.

"It's a tough one for referees because he doesn't know he's hit him that hard he has put him in hospital. It doesn't matter if you are lying on the ground or running through, if you get hit flush on the head you are going to have a problem.

"I'm not whinging about it, though. It's difficult for referees but losing my captain and influential player in the squad for most of the game was a concern."

In the late match on Saturday, Tomkins' brother Sam was influential as Catalans Dragons won 27-10 at home to Huddersfield Giants.

Brayden Wiliame scored a pair of quickfire tries to put the French side in control halfway through the first half, with Tomkins kicking each conversion as the Dragons pulled out of sight.

Tomkins then crossed himself 13 minutes before time to make the game safe.
