Canterbury Bulldogs struck a blow to Brisbane Broncos' top-four hopes with a 36-22 NRL victory at ANZ Stadium on Thursday.

Wayne Bennett's men had won five of their previous six matches, but they were well beaten by a Bulldogs side with only pride to play for.

The Bulldogs beat Wests Tigers last time out and Rhyse Martin scored 16 points with the boot in another impressive performance in the the absence of suspended enforcer David Klemmer.

A quickfire Korbin Sims double following tries from Bulldogs pair Josh Jackson and Will Hopoate left the Broncos trailing 16-12 at the break.

However, three tries in the space of eight minutes early in the second half put the Bulldogs firmly in control, Brett Morris, Matt Frawley - a late replacement for Jeremy Marshall-King - and Josh Morris going over.

Anthony Milford and Jamayne Isaako crossed at the other end, but it was too little, too late for a Broncos side that remain seventh.

Martin was on target with all five conversions and three penalties in a surprise win for Dean Pay's men.
