Manly shock Cowboys, Roosters and Rabbitohs win

Manly Sea Eagles claimed their first win of the NRL season in style with a surprise 30-8 success at North Queensland Cowboys and Sydney Roosters held on to claim a tense victory over Penrith Panthers.

An injury-hit Cowboys side slumped to their first loss of the campaign at 1300SMILES Stadium, where Manly outscored the hosts by four tries to one on Saturday.

Jake Granville surged through for the opening try, which Johnathan Thurston converted on the half-hour mark to put the Cowboys 8-2 up, but that was as good as it got for Paul Green's men.

Jorge Taufua scooped up a Daly Cherry-Evans grubber to score the Sea Eagles' first try and Tom Trbojevic ran the length of the pitch to go over just before the break.

Brenton Lawrence and Jackson Hastings added further tries in the second half and Dylan Walker booted 14 points for a Manly side who are now up and running, with the Cowboys beaten for the first time this season.

The Roosters are level with Melbourne Storm at the top of the ladder after edging out Penrith 14-12 to make it three wins out of three.

Michael Gordon scored a try in each half against his former club, the second of which coming seven minutes from time, soon after Waqa Blake had a try ruled out by the bunker for offside.

South Sydney Rabbitohs saw off Newcastle Knights 24-18 in the other game of the day, but George Burgess could be in hot water after lashing out at Mitchell Barnett, resulting in only a yellow card.
