Not happy with his performances early in the tournament, Australia star Darius Boyd was delighted to save his best for last in the Four Nations final.

Boyd played a starring role as the Kangaroos hammered trans-Tasman rivals and defending champions New Zealand 34-8 in Sunday's decider at Anfield.

The Brisbane Broncos star was among the try-scorers in Liverpool as Australia reclaimed the number one ranking in rugby league, while he was also nominated for the Golden Boot Award.

Speaking afterwards, Boyd told reporters: "I was really happy. I didn't think I played up to my standards the first few games.

"I was a bit disappointed with that. I had a chat to Mal [Meninga, coach] through the week. I'm just glad I could save my best game in the last one when it really counted.

"It was great to play a rugby league game at Anfield.

"We've underachieved the last few years. We really had a goal to get that trophy back and the number one ranking."
