Former squash world champion Nicol David was among the distinguished guests at the 20th Anniversary Laureus World Sports Awards in Berlin, Germany, on Monday.

The event saw, among others, F1 world champion Lewis Hamilton and Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi being named the joint-winners of the World Sportsman of the Year award and 2019 Rugby World Cup winners South Africa take home the World Team of the Year honour.

Despite not being part of the award nominees, the former squash queen, who called time on her professional career last year, received a brief recognition during that night.

"One of the memorable moments of the night was when the host [Hugh Grant] asked all the athletes in the room who had ever won a world title to stand up.

"I had the opportunity to stand up next to legends such as Lewis Hamilton, Alessandro Del Piero, Michael Johnson, Oksana Masters, and Jessica Ennis-Hill.

"It was truly an honour to have been there and also had the chance to represent Malaysia during the night," she said.

The 36-year-old was also involved in a special panel, alongside Vice president of the Olympic Committee Nawal El Moutawakel, former rugby champion Danielle Waterman, and Paralympics gold swimmer Alice Tai.

The panel focused on how to bring more equality to female athletes in competitive sports and break down barriers faced by women.
