A Malaysian athlete who won a medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games failed a doping test.

It was confirmed by Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary-general Low Beng Choo on Tuesday, while the relevant sports association is expected to make an official announcement very soon.

The latest development came just six months after Ng Yan Yee tested positive for sibutramine, and dealt another blow to the Malaysian contingent, who failed to meet the Podium Programme's target of finishing in top 10 in Gold Coast, Australia.

"A verification process is currently being carried out by relevant parties, so while it is ongoing, we cannot comment further.

"I know that the athlete is not one of our gold medallists.

"We are disappointed because efforts were made to raise awareness for everyone, but now that it has happened, we have to manage it especially with the athlete involved," she told Astro Arena.

In total, Malaysia won seven gold, five silver and 12 bronze medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in badminton, weighlifting, athletics, diving, gymnastics, lawn bowls, shooting, squash and table tennis.

Lee Chong Wei, Vivian Hoo, Chow Mei Kuan, Pandelela Rinong, Cheong Jun Hoong, Amy Kwan Dict Weng, Siti Zalina Ahmad, Emma Firyana Saroji, Azroy Hazalwafie Izhar Ahmad, and Aznil Bidin were Malaysia's gold medallists in Gold Coast.
