After a short stint away from the Circle, Tiffany “No Chill” Teo is back and ready to test herself in competition.

On Friday, 28 February, the Singaporean athlete faces Japanese grappling sensation Ayaka Miura in a strawweight clash at ONE: KING OF THE JUNGLE.

“No Chill” knows it will be a tough assignment to start the year, but she is confident she can ace this test.

Teo, who was originally scheduled to compete at ONE: EDGE OF GREATNESS in Singapore last November, had to withdraw from her bout against Maira Mazar because of an eye injury.

She watched closely as her replacement – Miura – stole the show by submitting Mazar in the second round.

Teo studied Miura closely during her recovery and gained some valuable insights about her opponent’s strategy.

“With Miura, I noticed that she always has a very fixed game plan for most of her fights. She’s more of a judoka who likes to bring the fight to the ground and will avoid standing too long,” Teo said.

“Miura has found a lot of success from the same takedowns or entry points in getting her opponents to the ground. I predict that coming into this fight, she will be adopting the same strategy.”

The Tokyo native enters this year as one of the breakout stars of 2019. She bolstered her reputation as a grappling specialist with three straight submissions by scarf hold Americana – a trademark move that has also caught Teo’s attention.

“Miura is a good grappler and she has a win streak going with her Americana. This will be a fight between the two number one contenders in the division, and it’s going to be a very close match-up,” the Singaporean said.

Despite Miura’s grappling pedigree, Teo has plenty of grappling experience herself. The Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu blue belt is active in the BJJ tournament circuit, and she will not back down from a ground battle with her Japanese rival.

“I won’t be trying to disengage with her on the ground. It will be a competitive scramble for sure, and if there is a submission opportunity, I will be taking it against Miura,” she declared.

“If we get to the ground, she will have a hard time keeping me in that position. Most of her opponents have tried to avoid the ground because they know she’s a specialist there, but I am very confident on the ground, too.

“So even if I do get in that position, I will work my way around, get back to a dominant position and finish the fight from there. It is not something that I am trying to avoid.”

Will “No Chill” break Miura’s submission streak with a grappling masterclass of her own?
