Ben Bishop's pending unrestricted free agency meant he would likely finish the season away from the Tampa Bay Lightning, but it was not expected to be with the Los Angeles Kings.
As the clock ticked down on his time in Tampa, the Lightning traded their long-time goaltender to the contending Kings on Sunday for veteran Peter Budaj and a swath of spare parts, the teams announced.
Los Angeles also receive a 2017 fifth-round draft pick.
Included in the package for the Lightning is 19-year-old defenseman Erik Cernak, a seventh-round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft and a conditional pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.
Tampa Bay will retain 20 per cent of Bishop's remaining $5.95million salary this season, per ESPN.com.
The deal comes just two days after Jonathan Quick reclaimed the Kings' crease following his four-month recovery from a groin injury.
