The reigning Stanley Cup champions picked up another draft pick Friday.
The Capitals dealt defenseman Brooks Orpik and goalie Philipp Grubauer to Colorado in exchange for the 47th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. The draft begins Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Orpik appeared in 81 regular-season games for Washington last season, tallying 10 assists. He added a goal and four assists during the Capitals’ Stanley Cup run.
Orpik spent the first 11 seasons of his career with the Penguins before he signed with Washington as a free agent in July 2014.
The trade helps Washington clear cap space as it attempts to re-sign defenseman John Carlson, who tallied 68 points for the Capitals this season. Orpik has one-year and $5.5 million remaining on his contract.
Colorado may look to move Orpik, according to a report from Sportsnet.
Grubauer has played in 101 games over the last six seasons for Washington. He has registered a 92.3 save percentage and a 43-31-11 record in net since 2012-13.
