Malaysia reached the men's hockey final at the 2018 Asian Games after beating defending champions India on penalties on Thursday.

After a goalless first quarter, in which Malaysia had a goal disallowed, India broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute through Harmanpreet Singh's penalty corner goal.

The Speedy Tigers managed to equalise in the 39th minute, but it only lasted a minute as Varun Kumar putting the Asian Cup winners in front again.

With less than two minutes remaining, Razie Rahim scored a penalty corner goal to make it 2-2 and send the game into a penalty shootout.

In the penalty shoot-out, Malaysia emerged triumphant 7-6 to seal their place in the final, where they will face Japan on Saturday, while India and Pakistan will battle it out for a bronze medal.

It is only the second time Malaysia reached the Asian Games final — they lost 0-2 to Pakistan in 2010.
