Jordan Spieth teed off the defence of his Open Championship title on a day when Carnoustie looked set up for low scoring.

The American, who won by three strokes at Royal Birkdale last year, was in the 19th group to go out on the famous links course, alongside Justin Rose and Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

Spieth took his major tally to three with his 2017 success at golf's oldest major, but he missed the cut at last month's U.S. Open and started with a solid par on Thursday.

The sun-baked fairways at Carnoustie have teased the possibility of seeing some attacking golf, with several of the early starters capitalising on the favourable conditions.

South Africa's Erik van Rooyen made the early running alongside 2016 Masters champion Danny Willett, the pair on four under after 13 holes.

Rory McIlroy, champion golfer of the year in 2014, tees off at 1253 BST, with world number one Dustin Johnson out at 1304, while 14-time major champion Tiger Woods takes to the course at 1521.
