Sandy Lyle struck the first tee shot to begin the 147th Open Championship at Carnoustie on Thursday.

Veteran Lyle, who won The Open in 1985, was handed the honour and teed off alongside Martin Kaymer and Andy Sullivan at 6.35am local time.

Defending champion Jordan Spieth is due to start his first round just before 10am in a group with Justin Rose and Kiradech Aphibarnrat, shortly before Jon Rahm, Rickie Fowler and Chris Wood follow in the next trio.

Rory McIlroy gets his Open started at 12.53pm in the group playing ahead of world number one Dustin Johnson.

And all eyes will be on Tiger Woods, playing his first Open since 2015 due to well-documented injury troubles, when he plays with Hideki Matsuyama and local favourite Russell Knox at 3.21pm as one of the later starters.
