As sweet as Carli Lloyd's second World Cup win was, she quickly admitted the wear playing at soccer's highest level has had on her body.

Lloyd, who often subs in whenever the United States women's national team is in a bind or just needs some added experience, played in all seven games at this year's tournament.

She was one of just three U.S. players to do so.

“The goal was winning. It’s been a really tough couple of years for me — I’ve been open and honest about it,” Lloyd told media after the match. “First and foremost, I’m really proud of this team and proud to be on this roster of 23 players to win another World Cup.”

Lloyd, 36, was also part of the 2015 winning team.

While her presence may have been muted Sunday against the Netherlands, she goes down as one of the most accomplished players in history. In the 2015 final, Lloyd became the first player ever to score three goals in such a game and just the second soccer player ever to score a hat-trick in either the men's or women's final, joining England's men's national team player Geoff Hurst.

Her other accomplishments include two Olympic gold medals (2008, 2012), two FIFA Player of the Year awards (2015, 2016) and three Olympic appearances (2008, 2012, 2016).

She has flourished in her role to close out games and hinted she will be around for the next Olympic games in 2020 — after enduring a tough campaign in the national team's early exit at the last games. But the next World Cup is a long way away.

“Like I said, it’s been a really tough couple of years,” she added. “It’s not based on my ability. And for whatever reasons, coaches made the decision. I tried to put up a good case.

“So I’m going to go home, I’m going to kind of let the emotions die down a little bit, speak to my husband and we’ll go from there.”

Lloyd has had a whopping 281 caps and 113 goals, which puts her fourth on the U,S.’s career list behind legendary players Abby Wambach, Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly.
