MLS Review: Rooney scores in DC defeat, Wondolowski breaks record

Wayne Rooney scored but DC United were beaten in MLS as record-breaker Chris Wondolowski stole the show on Saturday.

Rooney netted his seventh goal of the campaign in DC's 2-1 loss to Houston Dynamo at BBVA Compass Stadium.

The former Manchester United and England captain tapped in an Ulises Segura cross in the 46th minute.

However, DC fell behind in the space of two minutes after goals from Memo Rodriguez and Tommy McNamara.

Rodriguez equalised with a fine individual effort before McNamara scrambled in an Adam Lundqvist cross at the back post.

Paul Arriola was sent off late on for DC, who are second to Philadelphia in the Eastern Conference after Union drew 0-0 at home to the Seattle Sounders.

In San Jose, Wondolowski was the star with a four-goal haul in the Earthquakes' 4-1 win over Chicago Fire.

He went past Landon Donovan for most goals in MLS history, moving onto 148.

Wondolowski tapped in a Shea Salinas pass for the opener before breaking Donovan's record when he capitalised on an error from Chicago goalkeeper David Ousted.

But there was more to come, completing his hat-trick and adding a fourth before Aleksandar Katai's consolation goal for the Fire.

San Jose are eighth in the Western Conference, while Chicago are in the same position in the east.

Elsewhere, Minnesota United edged Columbus Crew 1-0 and Real Salt Lake recorded a 3-0 win over a 10-man Toronto.

Montreal Impact and New England Revolution drew 0-0 and the Vancouver Whitecaps struck late to hold Sporting Kansas City to a 1-1 draw.
