Jaelene Hinkle revealed the commemorative jersey honoring LGBTQ Pride Month the U.S. Women's National Team wore last year was the reason she did not join the team when she was called up.

The North Carolina Courage defender said she felt "conflicted" and ultimately decided to remain with the National Women’s Soccer League.

“I just felt so convicted in my spirit that it wasn’t my job to wear this jersey,” Hinkle told The 700 Club last June, although the interview was posted Wednesday.

"I knew in my spirit I was doing the right thing. I knew that I was being obedient," Hinkle said. "If I never get a national team call-up again, that just is part of (God's) plan."

The Courage visited the Portland Thorns on Wednesday, and boos were heard from the stadium when Hinkle was announced in the starting lineup. An array of rainbow flags were also seen.

Hinkle didn't address the boos after the game, but coach Paul Riley did and said he heard the boos throughout the match.

“She’s got a good heart, and she battled through the game. It’s not an easy thing for her,” Riley said, via the Associated Press. “I give her a lot of credit to be perfectly honest. Whatever her beliefs are, whatever she believes in, that’s her. It doesn’t affect the team. It doesn’t seem to affect anybody on the team.”

Since Hinkle declined to join the team last year, she has yet to be called up again.

The USWNT's roster has had high-profile players who identify as LGBTQ, such as Abby Wambach and Megan Rapinoe.
