Liverpool record signing Virgil van Dijk is a better centre-back than Tottenham star Toby Alderweireld is, according to Chris Sutton.

During a recent guest appearance on Astro SuperSport alongside Darren Anderton, the former Blackburn Rovers and Celtic striker was quizzed on which centre-back he rated higher.

Both are often considered to be two of the best defenders currently in the Premier League, but Sutton preferred the Dutchman.

"I just think [van Dijk] is a better centre-back," he said.

"He has the pace, composure, strength, can bring the ball out from the back, can score goals and is good in the air. What more do you want from him?"

As for Sutton's fellow SuperSport guest, Anderton leaned towards the Belgium international.

"Both are very good players, but obviously I have seen more of Toby and not so much of van Dijk," he said.

"Van Dijk has just gone to Liverpool and I believe he will be a great signing, but seeing what Toby has done to this Spurs team in the last two years, he has been massive for them."

Anderton also said Mauricio Pochettino's side have missed Alderweireld at the back since the defender limped off during a 3-1 win over Real Madrid last November.

"They have missed him massively," he added.

"He is a leader and loves to defend. Some defenders just want to get on the ball and start pinging balls like Ronald Koeman [but not Toby].

"Defenders are defenders and that's what he does best and that's why he is one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League."
