David James suggested that Liverpool's goalkeeper problem might be down to their goalkeeping coach following their 5-0 defeat to Manchester City.

Simon Mignolet, who started the game on Saturday, and Loris Karius have been Jurgen Klopp's first-choice goalkeepers since the start of last season, but both have failed to truly inspire confidence in goal.

With the problem persisting, the former Liverpool and Manchester City goalkeeper, who is currently in Malaysia to appear as a guest pundit for Astro SuperSport, decided to look at it from a different perspective.

"Unfortunately, the mistakes made by the Liverpool keepers are the same as last season in terms of their positions and tactical decision-making," said James.

"If the keepers are continuously making mistakes for Liverpool, then you need to ask the question whether it is the problem with the keepers or what the keepers are being taught or coached."

Liverpool's current first-team goalkeeping coach is John Achterberg, who has held the role since 2011.

On top of that, James also named Manchester United's Emilio Alvarez Blanco as an example of a good goalkeeping coach.

"I believe Manchester United have the [former] Atletico coach who produced David De Gea, Thibaut Courtois and [current Atletico Madrid goalkeeper] Jan Oblak," he said.

"The coach makes the keepers."

Meanwhile, when quizzed by fellow guest pundit Steve McMahon on which Liverpool goalkeeper he preferred, James picked Mignolet over Karius.

"Mignolet is more rounded, while I think there are still a lot of improvement that can be gained with Karius because he was raw when he came from Germany," he added.
