Taylor’s University and Universiti Selangor (UNISEL) outmatched 32 other universities from across Malaysia to be crowned the first-ever Garena Student Alliance (GSA) Championship winners for League of Legends and EA Sports FIFA Online 3 (FO3) at Asia Pacific University (APU)’s new iconic campus in Bukit Jalil, on 18 November 2017.

The RM62,000 prize pool included partial scholarships worth RM6,000 for each individual of the champion teams: Five students from Taylor’s University and three students from UNISEL.

As the host university and official venue partner, APU secured 2nd runner up positions for both League of Legends and FO3 competitions. The Top 4 finishers included Multimedia University (MMU) Cyberjaya and INTI University & College (INTI) for League of Legends, as well as Universiti Teknikal Melaka (UTeM) and INTI Nilai for FO3.

According to Prof. Dr. Ronald Edwards, Vice Chancellor of APU, he said: “We are extremely honored to be able to accommodate all the GSA Esports clubs in Malaysia. When we first opened our APU Esports Academy, we had every intention of gathering talented and passionate individuals to chase their Esports dream regardless of which university they represent.”

Republic Of Gamers (ROG) representative, Ren Hu, said: “We are impressed with the growth of Esports for universities in Malaysia and the partial scholarships represents a unique bridge between education and competitive gaming. We hope to see more from GSA in the near future.”

Earlier in September, Garena Malaysia announced ASUS Republic of Gamers as the official title sponsor for GSA Championship 2017, the Choice of Champions.
