Simon Yates became the Vuelta a Espana champion on Sunday after crossing the line safely in Madrid to become the third different Briton to win a Grand Tour this year.

The Mitchelton-Scott rider, 26, had been in the red jersey since winning stage 14 and his first Grand Tour success was confirmed after the largely ceremonial final section.

Quick-Step Floors' Elia Viviani came out on top in a bunched sprint to win the final stage, his third victory in this year's Vuelta.

Yates was able to finish safely in the main pack and his triumph follows the respective victories of Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas at the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France.

Viviani's team-mate Enric Mas came second in the overall standings while Astana's Miguel Angel Lopez finished third.

Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) was crowned king of the mountains while Movistar's Alejandro Valverde claimed the green points classification jersey.

That was a consolation prize for the 38-year-old, who finished fifth in the general classification standings having trailed Yates by just 25 seconds heading into stage 19.
