Khairul Hazwan Wahab, who was assisted by pilot rider Rauf Nur Misbah, showed no sign of injury to win a gold medal in the men's individual time trial (B) event at the 9th ASEAN Para Games on Wednesday.
The partially sighted cyclist was among the people caught in a hit-and-run accident while training on the Kuala Lumpur-Kuala Selangor (LATAR) Expressway two weeks ago.
Despite initially being ruled out of contention, Khairul showed incredible strength to clock a time of 33:13.88s and finish ahead of Singapore cyclists Jessen Ng and Tee Wee Leong.
It proved to be a good day overall for Malaysia in time trial events as they won four gold and three silver medals in total on the first day of road cycling.
Najib Turano, who won track cycling gold in the men's 4000m individual pursuit C4 and men's kilometre C4 events two days ago, bagged his third through the men's individual time trial C4.
Lim Tao Keong also won gold in the men's individual time trial H1-H5, before Yusof Hafizi Shaharuddin and Adi Raimie Amizazahan did a one-two finish in the mixed C1, C2, C3 category.
Malaysia's other two silver came from Zuhairie Ahmad Tarmizi (men's C5) and Nur Azlia Syafinaz Zais (women's B).
