India have called for Rishabh Pant to provide cover for Shikhar Dhawan after the opening batsman suffered a Cricket World Cup injury blow.

Dhawan made a brilliant century in the victory over holders Australia at The Oval on Sunday but was unable to field after being struck on the thumb while batting.

With uncertainty over how long Dhawan will be out of action, wicketkeeper-batsman Pant will fly to England.

Pant will be on standby in case powerful left-hander Dhawan can play no further part in the tournament.

A BCCI statement released on Tuesday said: "Dhawan is presently under the observation of the BCCI medical team.

"The team management has decided that Dhawan will continue to be in England and his progress will be monitored."
