Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum becomes latest NBA star to pass on FIBA World Cup

Another NBA star is passing on playing for USA Basketball in the upcoming FIBA World Cup, Yahoo Sports reported Saturday.

Trail Blazers guard CJ McCollum withdrew from training camp to concentrate on the 2019-2020 season, sources told the site.

McCollum becomes the fourth of the 20 players invited to the team's camp to withdraw. James Harden announced his decision Friday, joining Anthony Davis and Eric Gordon who also are passing on playing in the tournament in China.

The World Cup begins Aug. 31 and runs through Sept. 15. NBA training camps open the following week, with the regular season scheduled to start Oct. 16. Team USA is scheduled to open group play in Shanghai on Sept. 1 against the Czech Republic. In addition to practices, Team USA will play exhibition games in Australia leading up to the tournament.

McCollum, 27, has played all six of his NBA seasons in Portland. Since becoming a starter in his third season, he has averaged at least 20.8 points per game in each of the past four seasons, forming one of the most potent backcourts in the NBA with four-time All-Star Damian Lillard.

Lillard and McCollum led the Trail Blazers to a third seed in the Western Conference this past season and the team's first trip to the conference finals since the 1999-2000 season. Portland was swept by the Warriors in the Western Conference finals.
