Kyrie Irving verbally committed to re-signing with the Celtics long term Thursday. He may now be recruiting another star to Boston.

The 26-year-old guard has spoken with Pelicans big man Anthony Davis about the pair potentially playing together in Boston, according to a report from The Athletic, which cites unidentified league sources.

Davis has three seasons left on the five-year, $185 million extension he signed with the Pelicans in July 2015. But New Orleans may decide to trade him if he does not sign another extension next summer, the report says.

Some around the league believe the Pelicans would then deal him to the Celtics or Lakers, according to The Athletic.

Boston was without forward Gordon Hayward for all but one game last season and Irving went down with an injury in mid-March.

But the Celtics still finished 2017-18 with a 55-27 record and advanced to the Eastern Conference finals, where they fell to the Cavaliers in seven games. They’re expected to compete for the conference title again this season.
