NBA trade rumors: Jimmy Butler gives Timberwolves short list of teams

Jimmy Butler wants out of Minnesota.

The veteran guard has requested a trade from the Timberwolves, The Athletic reported Wednesday, citing unidentified league sources.

The report noted that "Butler has given Minnesota a list of one to three teams with whom he's open to signing extension" as a potential trade looms.

According to ESPN, that list includes the Nets, Clippers and Knicks, all of which have the cap space to sign Butler.

The Timberwolves were scheduled to meet with Butler this week to "have honest conversations" about his future with the team. Butler repeatedly has said he wants to be in the best place to win a championship, and Minnesota isn't the best option for that.

He has two years remaining on the five-year, $92 million deal he signed with the Bulls in 2015 before he was traded to the Timberwolves before last season. However, he can opt out after this season.

Butler, who turned 29 last week, averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists for Minnesota last season.
