Boston Celtics great Bill Russell was released from hospital on Saturday, the NBA Hall of Famer confirmed via Twitter.

According to reports, 11-time NBA champion and 84-year-old Russell was hospitalised because of dehydration late on Friday.

But Russell tweeted his thanks to everyone for thinking of him, and after acknowledging he was hospitalised, wrote, "My wife likes to remind me I don't drink enough. On my way home & as most my friends know I don't have a heart to give me trouble."

TMZ reported an ambulance transported Russell from his home in the Seattle area to a local hospital.

Russell was experiencing heart trouble and shortness of breath, according to TMZ.

Russell won a record 11 NBA championships, all with the Celtics, and is considered one of the greatest NBA players of all time.
