As expected, the Mavericks intend to offer restricted free agent Kristaps Porzingis a max contract, The Athletic reported Tuesday.

According to the report, the Mavs will meet with the 7-3 Latvian and extend the offer after free agency opens June 30. The five-year deal would be worth $158 million.

The Mavs paid a high price to land the 23-year-old star Jan. 31 in a blockbuster trade with the Knicks that cost Dallas former first-rounder Dennis Smith Jr. and first-round picks in 2021 and 2023 (top-10 protected).

Given that Porzingis missed all last season while recovering from a torn ACL, it made no sense to invest in a trade without planning to keep him around long term.

Now, the Mavs and their fans are dreaming of a 1-2 punch featuring Porzingis and 6-7 Luka Doncic, the 2019 NBA Rookie of the Year.

Porzingis boasts career averages of 17.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 2 blocks per game.
