Louisville is taking another step to try and close out the basketball program's most recent scandal.

Brian Bowen, whose family was allegedly paid funds by an assistant coach, will not be allowed to play for the Cardinals at any point, the school announced Wednesday.

Bowen has been granted written permission to transfer, but if he wants to remain at Louisville, he will be allowed to stay on an academic scholarship.

"Brian has been a responsible young man for the institution since he enrolled," Louisville interim director of athletics Vince Tyra said. "He has endeared himself to his teammates and the men's basketball staff with a positive attitude during a very difficult period."

Bowen, a freshman, was at the center of the basketball corruption scandal involving Adidas and Louisville, in which the FBI became involved. Bowen maintained that he didn't know that Adidas funneled roughly $100,000 to get him to sign with the school.

Instead, Bowen's father, Brian Bowen Sr., was allegedly the recipient of the money.

Louisville fired head coach Rick Pitino and assistant coach Jordan Fair for their involvement in the scandal. Athletic director Tom Jurich was also fired.
