Lauri Markkanen health update: Bulls forward cleared to play after scary heart issues

Lauri Markkanen's health scare appears to be over.

The Bulls announced Thursday that their power forward is cleared to resume full basketball activities after he experienced scary cardiovascular issues in March during the team's game against the Raptors.

According to the team, the extreme fatigue and elevated heart rate Markkanen experienced was enough for the organization to shut him down until he received further testing.

After meeting with cardiologists at Rush University Medical Center and Johns Hopkins University, it was determined Markkanen was suffering from dehydration and nutrient deficiency.

Part of the testing he underwent after the incident was wearing a heart monitor during his workouts to collect data.

Markkanen, 21, said he plans to improve on his lateral quickness this offseason and split time between training in Chicago and his native Finland.

“I want to play a long 82-game season and hopefully a long postseason, so I definitely have to work on it,” Markkanen said before the Bulls game Tuesday, via NBC Sports. “Just being able to get hit all the time and nothing happening. I think a lot of it is strength.”
