In J.R. Smith fashion, he was late on the situational awareness.

Three weeks after LeBron James announced his decision to join the Lakers, Smith publicly thanked his former teammate via Instagram.

Smith and James seemingly had a pretty close relationship during their time together in Cleveland, fourth-quarter meltdowns aside.

Maybe Smith needed some extra time to handle the news of James leaving since he'll be left to pick up the pieces in Cleveland along with Kevin Love, Tristan Thompson and Kyle Korver, among others.

The NBA season doesn't start until to late October so it remains to be seen how "The Land" will handle the departure of King James on the court.

But if this is any indication of things to come, with Smith leading the way, Cleveland is likely to be a step or two behind the pack in the Eastern Conference.
