Mitch Kupchak could be introduced as the Hornets' new general manager very soon.

The Hornets formally offered him the GM position Monday and are confident he will sign a long-term deal soon, The New York Times reported.

His acceptance is considered a formality, per Marc Stein's report.

The Hornets have been looking for Rich Cho's replacement since they fired him in February. Kupchak always was considered the favorite, and after the Hornets interviewed other candidates he remained the top pick.

He already had connections with team owner Michael Jordan, which likely helped him nab the position. According to the Charlotte Observer, Kupchak is a part of the extended Jordan family, given that they both starred at North Carolina about a decade apart.

That Carolina blue line, the Observer noted, also extends to Buzz Peterson, another former Tar Heel who is the Hornets’ assistant GM and has served as interim GM since Cho's firing.

Kupchak previously was with the Lakers until February 2017, when the organization cleaned house and fired him as it brought in new president Magic Johnson.

While with Los Angeles, Kupchak won two titles as its GM with Kobe Bryant.
