The father of NBA veteran Richard Jefferson has been killed in a drive-by shooting in California, according to multiple reports.

Richard Jefferson Sr. was shot Wednesday in Compton and died late in the night. He was 65 years old.

Investigators of the L.A. County Sherriff's department told ESPN in a statement they were unsure of a motive or suspect at this time.

Jefferson played for the Nuggets last year for his 17th NBA season. He made 20 appearances for Denver in 2017-18.

He was drafted in the first round by the Nets in 2001.

Jefferson's father and mother separated when he was young and was raised by his mom in Glendale, Arizona.
