MLB heavy hitters like the Red Sox, Cubs and Dodgers have shown interest in trading for Orioles star shortstop Manny Machado, but a smaller fish in the NL West may be the club to win his services ahead of the trade deadline.
According to MLB Network, the Diamondbacks have engaged in conversations with Baltimore to see what it would take to pry Machado away and insert him into their lineup.
The Diamondbacks (40-33) are one and half games ahead of the Dodgers atop the NL West, but could use an upgrade on the left side of the infield as Jake Lamb has disappointed throughout the season with a .214 batting average, five home runs and 21 RBIs.
Machado will be a free agent following the season. He has hit .305 with 18 home runs and 53 RBIs so far in 2018.
Machado is a .282 career hitter and has been named to the All-Star team three times, most recently in 2016. He has also won two Gold Glove awards in his seven-year MLB career.
Baltimore has struggled to open 2018 with a 20-51 record.
