The 2020 Malaysia Masters dished out its first big upset when Man Wei Chong-Pearly Tan stunned world number five pair Praveen Jordan-Melati Daeva 21-18, 21-13 in the mixed doubles first round on Wednesday.

The young Malaysian pair, ranked 84 spots below their more illustrious opponents, were aggressive and capitalised on rookie mistakes from the Indonesians to notch the biggest win of their partnership in just 27 minutes.

Their victory was made even more amazing by the fact Tan had also competed in the women’s doubles with M.Thinaah and won two hours earlier.

The 19-year-old was struggling to find the right words to describe her second victory of the day.

"I am still in shock to be honest. We were nervous before playing them, but as soon as we started, that feeling disappeared. I think our communication played a key role in our win.

"It also helped us that they made simple mistakes at the net," she said.

Man, who finished second with Tan at last year’s Malaysia International Series, was also amazed at their achievement.

"This is our first Super 500 event and to get a result like this is amazing. We had not trained together before to be honest. We only played together during tournaments," said the 20-year-old.
