Lee Chong Wei and the men's doubles pair of Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi made it to the Japan Open quarter-finals on Thursday.

They are the only Malaysian players remaining at the tournament after the second round, with Lim Khim Wah (partnering South Korea's Yoo Yeon-Seong) and Tan Boon Heong (partnering Indonesia's Hendra Setiawan) following Soniia Cheah and Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Jemie Lai out of the exit door.

Lee, who was far from his best in the first round yesterday, defeated Tommy Sugiarto in straight sets and extended his winning record against the Indonesian to 15-0.

Despite being down 17-20 in the first set, he rallied back to win 22-20 before sealing the second set 21-17.

The Malaysian No.1 singles shuttler will face Chinese Taipei's Chou Tien Chen, who beat 2016 Thomas Cup winner Hans-Kristian Vittinghus in the second round.

As for Lee's compatriots, Ong and Teo took out eighth-seeded Lee Yang-Lee Jhe Huei 21-18, 21-12 to book a meeting with Japanese duo Takuto Inoue-Yuki Kaneko.

The pairs last met each other in the Thailand Open in June, with the Malaysians losing 17-21, 21-16, 19-21.
