Lee Chong Wei edged past Hong Kong's Vincent Wong to reach the second round of the Japan Open on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old, who won the tournament last year, was made to work hard for the win against the opponent whom he had a 7-0 record against.

After taking the first set 21-15, Lee was pegged back one set 16-21 and then down 14-16 in the final set.

However, he came through to win 21-17 to set up an encounter with Indonesian shuttler Tommy Sugiarto on Thursday.

Besides Lee, other Malaysian shuttlers to made it to the second round in Tokyo were Soniia Cheah, Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie, Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi, Lim Khim Wah-Yoo Yeon Seong, as well as Tan Boon Heong and Lim Khim Wah, who are partnering Indonesia's Hendra Setiawan and South Korea's Yoo Yeon-seong respectively in the men's doubles.
