Presiden Persatuan Badminton Malaysia (BAM), Datuk Seri Norza Zakaria, menghormati keputusan beregu campuran negara, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying, yang enggan lagi terikat dengan peraturan BAM, sekali gus memutuskan untuk bergerak secara profesional bermula Januari ini.
Norza telah mengadakan sesi pertemuan bersama pasangan itu pada penghujung bulan lalu selepas mereka menyatakan hasrat ingin meninggalkan BAM tahun depan.
Atas alasan lebih selesa bergerak sendiri dan enggan lagi terikat dengan segala peraturan badan induk itu, Norza memahami kehendak pemenang pingat perak Olimpik Rio 2016 itu untuk menjadi pemain profesional dengan merangka program latihan sendiri bagi misi ke Sukan Olimpik Tokyo 2020.
"Mereka mempunyai cita-cita layak ke Olimpik tetapi mahu melakukannya sebagai pemain profesional," kata Norza.
Dalam masa sama, Norza tidak menganggap ketiadaan Peng Soon dan Liu Ying menjejaskan segala perancangan BAM, sebaliknya ini adalah masa yang tepat untuk jurulatih beregu campuran negara, Pang Cheh Chang, lebih mengutamakan persiapan pemain seperti Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie serta Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing pada musim depan.
"Kami telah memberitahu kepada jurulatih untuk memberikan fokus kepada barisan pelapis sementara memantau perkembangan beregu campuran senior yang sedia ada."
