Bekas Pengarah Prestasi Tinggi, Persatuan Badminton Malaysia (BAM), Datuk James Selavaraj, menuntut Badminton Asia lebih tegas memperjuangkan pendirian mereka dalam menangani isu perubahan sistem mata seperti yang dicadangkan oleh Persekutuan Badminton Dunia (BWF).
James secara peribadi berasakan tidak ada keperluan untuk BWF menukar format mata sedia ada.
Meskipun ia masih di peringkat kajian, James berharap Badminton Asia perlu lebih lantang dalam menyuarakan pendapat mereka kerana rata-rata negara Asia kurang bersetuju dengan usul BWF itu.
“Sistem 11 mata ini akan memberikan kelebihan buat negara-negara Eropah, jika kita lihat, kebanyakan negara Asia menolak cadangan BWF dan mahu mengekalkan sistem 21 mata,” katanya.
Daripada sudut pemain, James berasakan pemain akan menghadapi kesukaran untuk menyesuaikan diri kerana taktikal dan latihan untuk sistem 11 mata adalah jauh berlainan dengan 21 mata.
“Permainan badminton akan menjadi laju jika sistem 11 mata dilaksanakan. Pada pendapat saya, intensiti latihan harus dipertingkatkan lagi.”
Sistem 21 mata telah diperkenalkan ketika Piala Thomas/Uber 2006 oleh mendiang Datuk Punch Gunalan, yang ketika itu memegang jawatan Timbalan Presiden BWF.
