Malaysia were knocked out in the first round of the men's team event at the 2018 Asian Games on Sunday after losing 3-0 to Japan.
It was the first time Malaysia, who won bronze in the 2014 edition, failed to reach the quarter-finals at the Asian Games since the men's team event was first contested in 1962.
The encounter began with Liew Daren losing the first game 13-21, 14-21 to Kento Momota.
It was Liew's second defeat to the world number four in August, having lost once in the BWF World Championships semi-finals in Nanjing, China.
Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong then conceded a close match 18-21, 18-21 to world runners-up Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda, before Lee Zii Jia was downed 18-21, 17-21 by Kanta Tsuneyama.
The 2018 Thomas Cup winners will next face the winners of the South Korea-Thailand encounter.
