Indonesia shuttlers dealt the final blow to Malaysia's badminton medal aspirations at the 2018 Asian Games on Sunday.
Tan Wee Kiong-Goh V Shem and Ong Yew Sin-Teo Ee Yi were Malaysia's final hopes of winning a medal after the likes of men's singles player Liew Daren and mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying failed to make it to the quarter-finals.
However, it all ended after Tan and Goh fell to a close defeat of 20-22, 19-21 to world no. 1 pair Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.
Earlier in the day, Ong and Teo were outplayed by Indonesian duo Fajar Alfian and Rian Ardianto 17-21, 13-21.
Their quarter-final exits meant Malaysia, who crashed out in the first round of the men's team event to Japan a week earlier, finished empty-handed at the Asian Games for the first time since 1986.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) had set a target of winning two medals at the Asian Games this year — down from three after Lee Chong Wei became unavailable.
