Malaysia whipped Japan 3-0 to surge into the 2020 Badminton Asia Team Championships men's team final for a mouth-watering showdown against traditional rivals Indonesia on Sunday.

The Malaysians, who thrashed India and South Korea en route to the semi-finals, looked to continue that form against the Japanese team who were without superstar Kento Momota.

World number 14 Lee Zii Jia gave Malaysia the lead for his fourth win of the competition courtesy of a 21-11, 8-21, 21-11 success against Kanta Tsuneyama.

Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik doubled that advantage with a 21-18, 21-15 win over Takura Hoki-Yogo Kobayashi, before Cheam June Wei sealed the win.

The world number 72 had been in excellent form in Manila, and he showed his quality with a fine 21-19, 3-21, 21-12 victory over the higher ranked Kenta Nishimoto.

Malaysia will play two-time champions Indonesia for the title.

Indonesia, who won the last two editions, needed the firepower of world number one Kevin Sanjaya-Marcus Gideon to overcome India 3-2 in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, the Malaysia women's team failed to emulate their male counterparts after they surrendered 3-0 to Japan in the last four.

Japan had overcome Malaysia 3-2 in their Group W match, but showed their gulf in class on Saturday.

World number three Akane Yamaguchi downed Soniia Cheah 21-17, 21-18 for Japan's first point.

In doing so, Yamaguchi also avenged her defeat to the Malaysian in their group match.

Women’s doubles Yuki Fukushima-Sayaka Hirota made it 2-0 with a 21-11, 21-4 victory over Lee Meng Yean-Yap Cheng Wen, before Sayaki Takahashi confirmed the final berth by beating S.Kisona 21-13, 21-13.

Japan will play South Korea, who overcame Thailand 3-1 in their semi-final tie, in the final.

Both the Malaysia national men's and women's team confirmed their berth at the Thomas & Uber Cup in May after making the last four.
