Ethiopian runner Fantu Worku cost herself a potential win in the 3000 metres when she inexplicably finished half a lap early at the Diamond League meeting in London.

The 19-year-old looked to be pulling clear of Lilian Kasait Rengeruk with 200m to go, only to bizarrely pull up in the apparent belief the race was over.

Race leader Worku then watched as the chasing pack hurried past, leaving her to record a DNF.

Kenyan Rengeruk, meanwhile, took advantage of the charitable offer, going on to win the race in a time of 8:41.51.
