The man known as "The Mountain" revealed he has used steroids to achieve his goals.

Hafthor Julius Bjornsson, the reigning World's Strongest Man and the actor who plays Ser Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane in "Game of Thrones," said he has used steroids before deadlift competitions.

"Yes, I have," Bjornsson said when asked the question during a 2017 interview, which was aired Sunday morning on ESPN's E:60. "When you want to be the best, you do whatever it takes."

However, Bjornsson refused to go into detail about his steroid use or if he had used them recently.

"Can we just skip those questions?" he said when asked if he still take the drugs.

World's Strongest Man bans the use of steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs during or before competitions, but it's unclear how the organization tests its competitors and the frequency of the testing.

The 6-9, 440-pound Bjornsson, who hails from Iceland, said his original dream was to be a basketball player, but he had to switch courses after he broke his ankle twice by the age of 19.

He started the strongman competitions in 2011 and has since won the title of Iceland's Strongest Man. Last year, he broke the deadlift record to win World's Strongest man.

While in Iceland, a "Game of Thrones" producer approached him about the role of "The Mountain," which Bjornsson has played since season 4 beginning in 2014.

However, Bjornsson admitted the film schedule, training schedule and trying to be a good father and husband is starting to take a toll on his health. The use of steroids, which has been attributed to the deaths of several strongman athletes, doesn't help.

"When you are putting yourself through all this," says Bjornsson, "I've always thought about, 'What if I pass away?' It would be very hard to know that I left my family too soon. I want to be there for my family. I want to be there for my daughter. But this is my life. This is what I enjoy to do."

The 2019 World's Strongest Man competition is scheduled for June 13-16 in Bradenton, Florida, which Bjornsson said he plans to enter to defend his title.
