BYU linebacker Francis Bernard, who was third on the team with 80 tackles as a sophomore in 2016, will redshirt this season "for personal reasons," the university announced Thursday (via the Salt Lake Tribune).
Bernard, the projected starter at weakside linebacker from Herriman, Utah, will be a junior in eligibility in 2018, according to BYU's news release that offered few other details and had no comment from coach Kalani Sitake.
According to the Tribune, Bernard didn't participate in last week’s scrimmage. He was suspended for undisclosed reasons for BYU's Poinsettia Bowl appearance to close last season.
Redshirt junior Adam Pulsipher, who stepped in for the bowl, likely will start Sept. 2 when BYU opens its season against LSU.
