The Buffalo Bills put wide receiver Sammy Watkins on injured reserve on Friday, ruling him out for at least eight weeks.
Coach Rex Ryan told reporters earlier in the day there was "major concern" about Watkins' availability as the season progresses due to pain in his surgically repaired foot.
Watkins also missed the Bills' 33-18 win over the Arizona Cardinals last week and has not been able to practice at all this week.
"I don't mind doing this every week," Ryan said when asked on the possibility of Watkins playing in the future. "If Sammy can play, then obviously we want him out there. But if this is something that is hurting this young man in any way, shape or form, then absolutely I don't want him out there."
According to Ryan, Watkins might have aggravated his foot injury during a walkthrough at practice last week.
The Bills picked up receiver Justin Hunter to fill Watkins' roster spot. The former second-round pick was waived by the Miami Dolphins earlier this week.
